Destiny Through the Eyes
The eyes, peering out through the shadowed face,
The soul, hiding inside the shell of a being tormented by a torturous past
The circle of happy faces,
Covering the shattered lives underneath
Oh, this unforgiving life
Cruel and hostile to truth and faith
life and happiness
Why does that young face smile so sweetly?
How does happiness survive with so unfair a disadvantage?
That face, those eyes-
They could have belonged to a scholar or poet
A scientist or a mathematician
Yet those young eyes,
That soul not yet twenty
They are destined to a life not what it could be
Destined by one bad choice,
A choice not even her own
How can life be forgiven for such an injustice?
How can God tether this wonderful being to a life of misery?
Blocked from ever reaching her full potential
Because of where she was born
God's grace extends even to her
A troubled soul in a troubled land
That accounts for the smile
But even with the grace of God, how can life have any ray of joy?
How can a future so cruelly shattered
Be even worth reaching out for?
These are the things that cross my mind
The thoughts that flicker through my abstract contemplations
As I witness the smiling face
The longing eyes
Questions that will never be answered
Eyes, forever haunting my mind with their hidden sadness
